Interview with Laurent Louis – Revolution Movement
This interview was conducted by Nicolas Laus for the Belgian online news site www.lebrol.com. You can find the original interview here.
Former federal MP and founder of the Revolution Movement, Laurent Louis agreed to answer our questions. In this exclusive interview, he discusses his career, political experience, and vision of a direct democracy based on blockchain technology.
1. Returning Power to the People
Question: You created the Revolution Movement with the idea of returning power to the people. What motivated you to launch this movement, and what was your initial goal?
My goal is not to "return" power to the people, but to give power to the people, because in reality, the people never truly had it.
As a federal MP between 2010 and 2014, I realized:
- The gap between elected politicians and the public
- The influence of lobbies, sects, and elite groups like Freemasonry within politics
Professional politicians are not only disconnected from reality, but often serve interests that oppose those of the people.
I discovered blockchain technology and smart contracts and quickly realized that this could enable true participatory democracy. Allowing every citizen to propose and vote on laws is the only way to end the corruption that plagues politics.
If I decided to return to politics, it is because today I can promote a revolutionary idea capable of deeply transforming our societies—a revolution with global potential.
2. Participatory Democracy via Blockchain
Question: Your movement aims to eliminate traditional political parties and implement participatory democracy using blockchain. How would this work in practice?
What Revolution proposes is a world first! Blockchain provides a fully secure, transparent, and tamper-proof framework allowing citizens to:
- ✅ Propose laws
- ✅ Amend laws
- ✅ Vote on laws
All via smart contracts on a simple phone app. Blockchain and smart contracts cannot be manipulated or hacked, making this system immune to election fraud.
How the system works:
- Absolute transparency: Each citizen can verify in the blockchain ledger that their vote is respected
- Automation: Smart contracts automatically implement decisions without external interference
- Minister appointments: Citizens can appoint and remove government members through the same app
Candidates would present their programs, and citizens vote for their preferred candidate. If a Minister fails to fulfill promises, they can be removed via a satisfaction gauge.
3. Current Democracy as an "Illusion"
Question: You claim that current democracy is an "illusion". What are the main flaws of the Belgian and European political systems?
Despite the fables we've been told since childhood, we do not live in a democracy. We live in a "particracy"—and this is true worldwide!
Democracy is government of the people, by the people, for the people. Today, power lies with the powerful, exercised through parties, often corrupt or manipulated, against the people. The government is sovereign, while Parliament merely ratifies decrees from unelected EU technocrats.
4. Federal MP Experience (2010-2014)
Question: Looking back at your term as federal MP, what did you take away from this experience?
I realized that we are not in a true democracy. I never imagined a political opponent could be ostracized and harassed as I have been for 15 years. I have fewer rights than undocumented people, even though I am in my own country.
Nevertheless, I would not change anything. I did what I could, guided by my conscience. Few MPs can claim their speeches are still circulating online a decade later!
5. "Unrealistic" or "Populist" Positions
Question: Your program addresses strong topics: leaving the EU and NATO, canceling public debt, national sovereignty. How do you respond to critics who call these positions unrealistic or populist?
People often say the Revolution program is utopian—and it is! But great dreams have changed the world, like Martin Luther King's dream. Achieving big things always begins with dreaming.
I fully embrace the utopian aspect of Revolution. Perhaps it will take 100 years to materialize, but I am convinced that blockchain-based participatory democracy will emerge.
6. Family Life as Motivation
Question: How has your personal life, especially your adopted daughter, influenced your political engagement?
My adopted daughter motivates me to overcome the challenges imposed by the Belgian state. She has severe cerebral palsy and requires full care, yet she wakes up every morning with a smile. If she can smile every day, I must also persist and fight.
7. Making Blockchain Accessible to All
Question: How do you make blockchain voting accessible to everyone, including those less familiar with technology?
Using blockchain or Web3 does not need to be complicated. Just as anyone can use a bank card, citizens can use the voting app on their phones without knowing the technical details. Smartphones are ubiquitous, and my system ensures even those without one will receive a device.
8. A Political Free Electron
Question: You are often described as a free electron in Belgian politics. Is this independence an advantage or a challenge?
I am not a politician; I am a man fighting for his people. My goal is not to be elected but to awaken citizens and show that another world is possible. Even if elected, I could not receive a salary due to lack of a bank account.
9. Upcoming Obstacles
Question: What is the greatest challenge your movement will face in the coming years?
The greatest challenge is fighting media lies, censorship, oppression, pressure on movement leaders, and attacks. Fortunately, social media enables citizens to form their own opinions.
10. Vision for the Future
Question: In ten years, what role would you like to play politically, and what impact do you hope to leave through the Revolution Movement?
I do not seek a role in politics. My goal is to revolutionize the system and establish true democracy. I refuse coalitions and governments, believing collaboration with traitors is impossible. I hope blockchain-based participatory democracy spreads worldwide as the path to save humanity.
